Memphis, in 2021, is ranked the 2nd most dangerous city to live in. I’ve lived here since 1959. It use to be a beautiful city with wonderful people.
The Fire Museum on Union Ave is a must for kids and adults alike!! Amazing flash over room simulates a real house fire. The Ornamental Metal Museum is a great hands on museum that has a wonderful gazebo over looking the river, perfect for a picnic!
I work in downtown Memphis, my employer recommends we all have our sidearms on our person as we work due to the crime. It has got better in the last few years, but we still have the need. Work has me traveling all the time but as far as Gus’s and Central BBQ, those are my personal favorite chicken and BBQ places in the country. Can’t go wrong stopping by there. The lines are long for a reason.
The Memphis Zoo is seriously one of the best…and I’ve visited the San Diego Zoo.
I grew up in midtown Memphis 5 blocks from the zoo. It was so cool to occasionally hear the lions roaring in the distance. 🦁

In my younger years I was one of those people that lived for the nightlife on Beale St., if I wasn’t at 152’s I’d be standing around people watching. But now that I’m older I actually appreciate Beale more in the day time with a nice crowd a little more.
I was born and raised in Memphis… #1 don’t ever ever ever put your Guard down , Never hang around within a quarter of a mile from these tourist spots or you will learn what Memphis is really about
I know what it’s about. Thug culture, guns, prostitution, ghetto rap music, artery clogging;high blood pressure; diabetic type of food, murder, suicide, and terrible education system
Just went this summer and had a great time. Amazing food on Beale St. On a trip a few years ago went to the barbecue festival. That was a little disappointing to find out you can’t go and get barbecue.
Most of the crime in Memphis is by people who know one another. I’m from “across the bridge” but lived in Memphis and I know my city. Stay away from Family Dollars, Dollar Trees, and gas stations with thugs hanging out in front. Just go wherever you’re going and act like you know. Don’t stare at folks and don’t pause at green lights. I live in North Carolina now, but Memphis will always be my city.

I have been to Memphis once — Memphis has November 6th Street; we saw the street sign and had to know what story was (almost) no one known so asked the concierge at the Peabody and was told the street was name honor of November 6, 1934, the “day the city’s residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of receiving public power.”

It’s a commonality that we all have to deal with, locals and tourists alike! Memphis in May is a month long event where every weekend has a special event, one weekend is the Music Fest, one is the BBQ Competition. Plan to come on which weekend interests you!

The Stax Museum and Sun Records are a must if you are a music fan.There is also a great classic car museum across the street from Sun.
I live just south of Memphis and do deliveries in every part of Memphis 6 days a week. It has it’s good and bad areas. Just be aware of your surroundings.

@ceylon My point was it’s way out on Walnut Grove, with all that traffic nonsense, not near Downtown or Graceland, or the Zoo. They would either have to have a car to get there or a reason to go there. The Botanical Gardens or Dixon Art Gallery would be closer to Downtown and more appealing to tourists.

@Alex Living Abroad living in Vienna I can’t imagine to follow that instructions … I don’t know any place here I would be afraid to go to. And Vienna hosts 3 times the number of inhabitants compared to Memphis. What’s up over there?

@Alex Living Abroad Ive lived in memphis my entire life and I hear gunshots all the time. I have had guns pulled on me before. Sisters have been kidnapped. Its no joke. This year I am pretty sure we are breaking all the violent crime records we have. And we broke them all last year too. Huge uptick. My biggest don’t here is, DONT GO TO A GAS STATION OR ANY CONVIENIENCE STORE AT NIGHT. Only fuel up at a gas station that is both Busy, and nicely lit. I cant stress it enough. Every single day i see a different Gas station police taped off. We just had a mass shooting at a Kroger in Collierville. Don’t underestimate the crime for real.
@Hardliving Livinghard another one track tunnel vision minded person. Yea some of what you said is true but some of what you said is probably what you’ve seen on the news. How much do you really get out of the house and enjoy life because if you did then you’d know that there’s a lot around here to appreciate and that’s the problem with the majority of Memphians they watch too much of the news and then get scared to go out. Yes you can be self aware of everything that goes on around and in the city but that doesn’t me you can’t enjoy the positive things. I lived in Colorado Springs, CO for about 3 years.. one state hailed as one of the safest places to live but I saw the same things I saw here while I was there but I didn’t let it detour me from enjoying what made that city that city… crime is everywhere and there’s a ton of mass shootings that have happened in Colorado but yet their economy has been booming and people want to live or move there same with every state or city it’s all about prospective
@Earth is Ghetto simple minded thinking. That can happen anywhere. Just use Colorado as an example and the shootings they’ve had. I lived in Colorado Springs for 3 years and they’ve been ranked up in one of the safest states to live … doesn’t mean the unexpected can’t happen

@Melissa Bystrom there isnt much random violence compared to.other big cities. That happens occasionally but theres a reason memphis homicides have such a high rate of being solved, because it isn’t random.

On the other hand, September can still be brutal here.
Spring time is beautiful there. If you time it right, with all the spring flowers in bloom it can be just glorious. Memphis is geographically far enough north and far enough south that a lot of really beautiful things bloom there in April.
Southaven MS has great hotels as well. They are off the expressways and closer to downtown and these hotels are surrounded by a great shopping area.
Or arkansas
Nice hotels in Arkansas also. 5 minutes from downtown.
Ironic last time to Memphis I stayed in tunica it was an easy drive to memphis
